Ashen one...

1 min read
It has been quite a while since I last made a journal here... Jessica and I have been looking to save money so that at some point, maybe this year, she could come stay with me, this has meant that money for artwork is a bit tight, with her new job, it also means the two of us haven't been able to collaborate on stories much, any writing we do is more... personal.

All that said, I made this journal because I have been playing Dark Souls 3, and due to the matchmaking I've found it hard to find allies for fights against The Dancer and Sister Freide. If anyone would like to get their jolly co-operation on, I'd love the company.

So if anyone out there wishes to join me, then send me a note and I'll provide my steam handle.

Two of my friends have decided to start up a podcast. If you're chill and want to hear them talk, check out the URL below.

eforestrogen.tumblr.com/post/1…

Here's what Lily has to say about the show in her own words.

"Emily (she/her, trans woman) and Lily (they/she, non-binary) invite you to join them on a pre-recorded adventure through trans culture, fashion, games, and more! In today’s premiere episode, we talk about trans characters in games, and how they probably could’ve been handled better.

You can find us at Eliala and gremilyn"

A friend of mine is starting up a patreon: pkoctarian.tumblr.com/post/169…

Reid is a cool dude and has drawn artwork for me before, his style is good for cute girls and boys alike and he is quite adept at gay.

He drew Snowy Owl Robin by Levia-the-Dragon for me, and I'm sure his patreon will offer some cool stuff.

Peace.

A dear friend of mine has been struggling recently, she is trans and is trying to go about medically transitioning. On my advice she reluctantly created a gofundme: www.gofundme.com/3np9zcw

She had hit complications in the legal and the financial areas that have made something like this necessary. She wishes to remain largely independent, while also keeping personal safety at the forefront. All of the money she receives will go towards her expenses that are strictly related to being transgender, such as doctor visits for hormones or voice therapy.

If enough could be raised she would be interested in pursuing surgery, but right now she is just trying to survive. Feel free to donate as much or as little as you are comfortable with. She has no problem with accepting multiple small ones or one large one, whichever works best for you.

Also out of respect, if you know who she is on this site do not say so here. She wishes to not draw attention to herself that way and came to me for help for a reason. If you wish to ask her in private how she is doing or how else you might be able to help get in contact with her, but do not out her here or on the page. Thank all of you so much for any support you give and she thanks you as well a million times over.

Again, that gofundme is at: www.gofundme.com/3np9zcw Please help however you can.

I am a firm believer that a writer can write things out of the realm of their direct personal experience... so long as they do so with the acknowledgement that people are allowed to call them out if they bork it up. But I can admit that I stay within my comfort zone a lot, it should surprise no-one who looks at my stable of characters that I am white, and that puts me in a position of some privilege, it also causes me to default to certain cognitive biases when writing, specifically... most of my characters are white women.

This isn't about some forced tokenism, about introducing new characters just to have different races represented and be broad simplistic archetypes, it has simply been pointed out to me that one of my existing characters already has traits which could easily cause someone to read her as something other than I intended. Specifically I have accidentally given my main gal Robin Morgan some physical and ideological traits often associated with Asian people. Most notably her dark hair, her strong sense of duty and her fondness for meditation and a quiet, reserved face she puts on for the world. I have actually had people mistake her for an Asian woman before, not often, and most viewers don't even seem to care, but it has been on my mind.

Robin's race has never really been relevant to her personality or background, her being white wasn't integral to her backstory, and if I were to consciously confirm what some people have suspected then it wouldn't alter much, she wouldn't suddenly be way more into Shintoism or Buddhism, anime or tea ceremonies, or anything else from the rich history of Asian nations I know very little about, she would still be born and raised in a western nation, having primarily absorbed that culture. Which region of Asia any Asian ancestors came from would also affect little beyond some relics of thrice-removed culture.

I guess what I'm asking here is what anyone who cares thinks about this decision I am mulling over. I have no desire to be disrespectful to any culture, any mistakes I would make in my portrayal would be honest, unwitting ignorance and I would value efforts to enlighten me. While anyone should be allowed to write anything... that is not an excuse to be an ignorant asshole and wilfully spread misinformation, so I'm taking pains to assure everyone of the sincerity in my intent.

So yeah, I'll put up a poll shortly, feel free to leave your thoughts there.
